Tattoo Malaysia is an independent website that helps people make better decisions about tattoos in Malaysia. This page explains what we cover, who we write for and how we keep the site useful and honest. In short, we want to be the guide we wished existed when we first started asking around about studios, prices and aftercare.
What Tattoo Malaysia is about
The site covers the whole life of a tattoo. First, there is finding a studio, with city guides for Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, Sabah, Sarawak and more. Next comes cost, so our tattoo price guide breaks down real RM ranges by size, style and placement. After that, we explain healing in our tattoo aftercare guide, written for Malaysian heat and humidity. Finally, we cover cover-ups, touch-ups and laser tattoo removal.
We also write about the culture behind the ink. Borneo has one of the oldest living tattoo traditions in the world, and our guide to Malaysian tattoo designs explains Iban motifs, batik patterns and the bunga raya with care and context.
Who we write for
Most readers are Malaysians planning a first or next tattoo. Many others are tourists and expats who want a safe, good-value session while they are here. Some readers are parents, partners or employers who simply want to understand the rules. Because of that mix, we write in plain English, explain local terms and avoid jargon where we can.
How Tattoo Malaysia chooses studios and clinics
Every studio, artist and clinic we name has been checked against at least two independent sources, such as its own website or Instagram plus a map listing, a press feature or a trusted directory. We also look for signs that it is still operating, such as recent work or recent reviews. Our selection criteria are portfolio quality, visible hygiene standards, reputation, longevity and range of styles.
No studio or clinic can pay to appear on this site, pay to move up a list or pay to change what we write. We do not run sponsored listings. If that ever changes, we will label it clearly and update this page first.
How we handle prices
Tattoo prices change with the artist, the design and the season, so we always give ranges rather than single numbers. Our ranges come from published studio rates, minimum charges stated by studios, press reports and price discussions on Malaysian forums. Even so, a quote from your chosen artist is the only figure that counts, so we always suggest confirming before you book.
Health, religion and the law
Tattoos touch on health, faith and employment, and Malaysians hold a range of views on all three. We aim to be accurate and neutral. For health topics we link to sources such as the Ministry of Health Malaysia and the American Academy of Dermatology. For religious questions we describe what official bodies have said without telling anyone what to believe. Nothing on this site is medical, legal or religious advice.
Corrections and contact
If a studio has closed, moved or changed its prices, please tell us. Likewise, if you spot an error, we want to fix it quickly. You can reach the team through our contact page. You can also read our full editorial policy and our terms of use, or head back to the Tattoo Malaysia homepage to start exploring.
